Essex County Museum and Historical Society Archives

The Museum’s archives are comprised of objects, photographs, manuscripts, books, publications, ephemera, and genealogical materials that are related to and bring to life the rich history of Essex County.   Many of these items have been generously donated over the years by the people and families who have lived in Essex. Please contact our curator at 804-443-4690 to discuss your donations to our collections.

In addition, the Essex County Museum & Historical Society publishes newsletters each year as well as well as historic bulletins which contain scholarly articles about Essex County, Virginia and her citizens.

Catesby and Lila Maddox Ware Research Room

Essex history, marriages, historic homes and cemeteries are among the subjects covered by the reference books found in the Museum’s Research Room.  Many of the books available for research can also be purchased in our adjacent Rappahannock River Gift Shop. For researchers of family history, our books offer a general overview; we recommend contacting the office of the Essex County Clerk of the Court in Tappahannock where records are available for in-depth genealogical research.
