The Essex County Museum has joined the Chesapeake Gateways Visitor Experience Network!
The Museum has officially been approved as a Chesapeake Gateways Network Site.
The Chesapeake Gateways and Watertrails Network (often shortened to “Chesapeake Gateways”) is a partnership program of the National Park Service (NPS) that was established under the Chesapeake Bay Initiative Act of 1998 to weave together natural, cultural, historical and recreational places within the 41‑million‑acre watershed of the Chesapeake Bay. The program’s mission is to inspire visitors to discover and connect with the heritage of the watershed, to increase access to its resources, and to support conservation, restoration and stewardship of the land and water.
Through this relationship, the museum benefits from alignment with NPS interpretive goals (and potentially technical or grant support) and visitors gain a richer understanding of how that one local site links into the larger Chesapeake ecosystem, both natural and cultural.
